14 March 1969, 1–5 Cav Battalion Journal, 1013: “B Co is in contact with 03 individuals 45 meters away, running, 3rds returned fire, riding 03 bicycles … fork, bamboo on bicycles to carry weapons … One WIA, hand, no name.”

March 1969, 2–12 Cav Operational Report: On the morning of 8 March Company D’s PO/LPs around LZ Grant picked up heavy movement. Shortly after that LZ Grant received a heavy rocket, mortar and recoilless rocket attack, followed by a heavy ground attack. During the mortar attack a 120mm mortar hit the TOC, killing the Bn. Co., LTC Gorvad, the Assistant Operations NCO, the LNO, and one RTO. The round also wounded the Intelligence Sergeant, the Operations NCO, and one other RTO … Operations Officer, Major Brown assumed command … [105 and 155 batteries on Grant] fired 1400 rounds … both direct and indirect fire … mortar sections of C and D Companies fired over 1000 rounds of 81mm mortar. Spooky and Blue Max provided additional support. Contact broke at 0530 hrs.… 150 NVA KIA, 2 NVA/WIA/PW … Friendly losses were 15 US/KIA and 31 US/WIA.

March 1969 1–5 Cav Operational Report: 15 Mar C Company captured POW w/AK-47. When the company’s 2nd Platoon blew its ambush, killing one or two of his companions, the POW ran toward company’s F.O.B, and was tackled. He was a medic with the 7th NVA Battalion, 29th Regiment.

12 April, 0900, 1–5 Battalion Journal: “B Co requests medevac for Sp4 Robert Lewis, snake bite.”
